Introduction to Painting
This class is organized to address the needs of the beginner painter who wants to practice and learn the basics. New painters will learn to build an acrylic (or oil) underpainting from scratch, and mix colors while developing your ability to evaluate value and composition. The setting is relaxed and informative. For returning students with experience in acrylic or oil, this workshop will provide an opportunity to work on independent projects.
The intention of this class is to create a space for artistic learning, showing by example in real time the practice and thought process of being an artist, creating a IRL group space to share and talk about art while offering advice on materials, technique, and subject matter.

Landscape Painting
This painting class is geared toward students who want to learn how to paint landscapes in acrylic. Lessons designed for all levels of painters will be set up as an introduction to painting landscape. We will focus on step-by-step processes for how to develop exciting and provoking pictorial images/paintings.
The class will be broken up into parts including focusing on composition, thumbnail/value studies, careful study and analysis, painting palette, and of course painting! We will look at examples of paintings in class and learn from historical examples. We will also focus on setting up an environment and methodology to painting that will ensure success and build confidence while also improving your speed of painting.

Painting at Ulna Studio
Painting classes at Ulna studio offer dynamic learning experiences for both new and experienced painters. Newcomers will begin the painting journey through underpaintings from scratch, color mixing, as well as honing their skills in evaluating value and composition.
The atmosphere is relaxed but also informative, fostering a space for artistic growth. In real-time Jolyn and Cole (the primary painting instructors) will share their thought processes during demonstrations in class. Additionally, students will receive exercises that concentrate on painting concepts and techniques, with the instructor providing hands-on guidance as they move around the class.
Ulna Studio is dedicated to facilitating a safe space for creative exploration. What that means when it comes to creating is a supportive community, positive feedback and instructors with a willingness to work with students wherever they are. We hold visual voice in balance with (and sometimes in preference to) craft. We aim to dismantle some of the hierarchy present in the art world and create an accepting space to make mistakes, explore materials, meet friends and create art as an experience.
Our painting classes are available throughout the year. You can enroll in our 6-week “Introduction to Painting” course or explore “Introduction to Landscape” painting. Additionally, our studio offers shorter workshops, including learning opportunities in oil painting, watercolor, gesture, and abstraction.
Painting instructors include Jolyn Fry, Cole Lyons, Lettie Jane Rennekamp and guest instructors.
